How Does UV Affect Your Roofing Materials?

Nature, specifically the local climate and frequent weather conditions, is among the essential factors to think about when choosing a roofing material. Nearly all buildings need to utilize materials that will not easily surrender to the effects of ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun. A roofing repair expert discusses how UV impacts roofing materials below.

What Is UV Radiation?

Ultraviolet radiation is a form of non-ionizing radiation that is produced by the sun and artificial sources such as specialized lamps and lasers. Most of the UV radiation from the sun is absorbed in the Earth’s atmosphere, however, approximately 33 percent still touches the objects on the surface of the planet.

How Roofing Materials React

If certain roofing materials are not treated properly to ward off the harmful effects of UV, their molecular makeup can become compromised and damaged after a period of exposure. The chain of molecules will begin the process of breaking down, causing both physical and chemical changes in the material. In many cases, the damage is so extensive that the homeowner is forced to call for a roof replacement service.

UV degradation can affect numerous natural and synthetic polymers like neoprene, rubbers and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). With too much exposure, these materials can lose strength, become less flexible, crack and disintegrate.

How Acrylic Coatings Protect Against UV

An acrylic elastomeric roof coating is a seamless, fully adhered membrane that is applied on a roof. This type of coating is five to 10 times thicker and more effective than regular house paint. As it dries on the roof, it forms a significantly tough barrier like EPDM but without the seams. An acrylic roof coating is usually white in color, meaning it can reduce the temperature of the membrane and block damaging UV rays to slow down the degradation process of the roofing material. It also helps reduce heat transfer into the building, helping cut down on air conditioning costs.
