Roof Fire Ratings: A Quick Guide

Roofing systems are typically designed to be impervious to wind and impact damage, but they are also rated in other ways. If you want your roof sturdier and longer lasting, make sure they offer exceptional resistance to fire, as well. This means checking which fire rating classification it belongs to. Your Professional Roofer, the premier industrial roofing expert in the area, offers a quick guide to roof fire ratings here.

  1. Class A. You’ll want to pick a roofing system with a Class A fire rating because it can deliver effective resistance against severe fire exposure. To get this rating, a roof should be able to experience a maximum flame spread of 6 feet and should last up to 4 hours before ignition. Not only that, it should also resist 15 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off.

Just how fire-resistant a roof can be is mostly dependent on the type of material it uses. Prime examples of Class A fire-rated roofing options include clay and concrete tiles, slate, and asphalt fiberglass composition shingles. Most metal roofs, such as aluminum and copper, also belong to the Class A rating.

  1. Class B. A roof with a Class B rating can provide moderate resistance against fire damage. It should be able to experience a maximum flame spread of 8 feet, last an hour before ignition, and resist 8 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off. Pressure-treated wood shakes and shingles are usually Class B fire rated.
  1. Class C. You can only expect light protection against fires with Class C roofing. It experiences a maximum flame spread of 13 feet, lasts 20 minutes before ignition, and resists only 3 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off. Plywood, particleboard, and untreated wood shakes and shingles–materials that undoubtedly fail as a roof covering–all belong to this classification.
